Strong anti-rape law for India as President Pranab clears the Bill

An anti-rape protester

President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the anti-rape bill which provides for life term and even death sentence for rape convicts besides stringent punishment for offences like acid attacks, stalking and voyeurism.

Mukherjee accorded his assent to the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill-2013 on Tuesday, brought against the backdrop of the country-wide outrage over Delhi gangrape , and it will now be called the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013, an official release said on Wednesday.

The law, passed by Lok Sabha (lower House of Indian Parliament) on March 19 and by Rajya Sabha (upper House of Indian Parliament) on March 21, has replaced an Ordinance promulgated on February 3.

It amends various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Indian Evidence Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

With an aim of providing a strong deterrent against crimes like rapes, the new law states that an offender can be sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than 20 years, but which may extend to life, meaning imprisonment for the remainder of the convict’s natural life and with a fine.

It has provisions for handing out death sentence to offenders who may have been convicted earlier for such crimes.

The law, for the first time, defines stalking and voyeurism as non-bailable offences if repeated for a second time. Perpetrators of acid attack will attract a 10-year jail.

It also defines acid attack as a crime besides granting a victim the right to self-defence. It also has provisions for imposing a minimum 10-year jail term for perpetrators of such acts.

The law has fixed age for consensual sex at 18 years.

New sections to prevent stalking and voyeurism were introduced following a strong demand from women’s organisations.

The amendments seek to define and prescribe punishment for the offences of stalking, voyeurism and sexual harassment.

The law also seeks to widen the definition of rape, broaden the ambit of aggravated rape and enhance the punishment for such crimes.

It also provides that all hospitals shall immediately provide first aid and/or medical treatment free of cost to the victims of acid attack or rape, and failure to do so will attract punishment.

It has provisions for a minimum imprisonment of seven years which may extend to imprisonment for natural life, and a fine for rape convict if he is found to be a police officer, a public servant, armed forces personnel or management or hospital staff.

The law also seeks to amend the Indian Evidence Act to allow a rape victim, if she is temporarily or permanently mentally or physically disabled, to record her statement before a judicial magistrate with the assistance of an interpreter or a special educator. It also has provisions to video-graph the proceedings.

Eros International for mocking him in Om Shanti Om, seeks Rs.100 crore for damages

Manoj Kumar (Left); Shah Rukh Khan

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the producer of 2007 hit Om Shanti Om – Eros International – seeking damages of Rs.100 crore for releasing the film in Japan without removing certain scenes apparently lampooning him.

The case was filed at an Andheri court by Kumar’s lawyer.

Talking about the case, the lawyer said that Kumar’s verification statement was recorded by the court and an order was expected on April 6. He said SRK’s e-mail tendering apology for a scene mocking Kumar in the film was produced as evidence.

The lawyer said that Kumar would produce a CD as evidence which has the clipping of the mockery scene being played at Japan release of Om Shanti Om on the next date. He said the veteran actor has been highly upset and is shocked by SRK’s action.

“He promised Manoj Kumar earlier but repeated this mistake again in Japan… No personal apology was given by SRK… He is not in a mood for any settlement,” Kumar’s lawyer said.

Earlier Kumar had said, “The film was released in Japan without deleting those scenes. I had forgiven them twice but not this time. They have disrespected me. They also face contempt of court as in 2008 the court had asked them to forever and from all prints and broadcast material, delete those scenes.”

Princess Diana visited South London gay bar dressed as man

Princess Diana

Princess Diana was once smuggled into a gay bar in South London dressed as a male model, British comedienne Cleo Rocos has claimed in a memoir.

Cleo Rocos, who starred in the Kenny Everett Television Show, said she accompanied the princess along with the Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and fellow comedian Kenny Everet to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern in South London during the 1980s, the Sun reported.

Dressed in a camouflage army jacket, black leather cap and aviator sunglasses for the prank, Di looked like a male model, Rocos revealed in her new book The Power of Positive Drinking.

She added that disguised Di was delighted when she was served in the bar without being recognized.

Rocos said when they walked inside the bar they felt the princess would be discovered at any minute, but people just seemed to blank her and Diana loved it.

Next day Di had the clothes returned with a note ending: “We must do it again!” the comedian stated.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid

If you’re interviewing for jobs, you know the feeling of kicking yourself for hours after an interview because you flubbed an answer or got the interviewer’s name wrong. But no one is perfect, and most interviewers don’t expect candidates to give perfect interviews. However, there are some interviewing mistakes that are easily avoidable, and which you can navigate away from with just a little bit of thought.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid
Not preparing
This is probably the No. 1 mistake most job candidates make: They show up for the interview without thoroughly preparing in the days before. Preparation doesn’t mean a quick skim of the job description and a glance at the employer’s website; it means at least several hours spent thinking through likely questions and practicing your answers to them, as well as thinking back on specific examples you can pull from your past to illustrate how you’ve excelled in previous jobs.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid
Not researching your interviewer
A quick glance on LinkedIn might give you advance warning that your interviewer used to work with that old boss who hated you, meaning you won’t be caught off guard if asked about it in the interview. Or simply reading your interviewer’s bio on the company website might tip you off that she has a background in the software you used to work with and you might get a lot of questions on that.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid
Being late
You might think that you’re playing it safe by leaving for your interview a few minutes earlier than you need to. But hit a traffic accident and that buffer will fly out the window, which means you could end up arriving late. When you’re heading out to an interview, it’s smart to give yourself a huge buffer–meaning an hour or so–because it’s nearly impossible to recover from being late for an interview. You can always kill the extra time in your car or a nearby coffee shop if you arrive early.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid
Wearing the wrong outfit
In most industries, you should wear a suit to a job interview. (IT is sometimes, but not always, an exception.) It doesn’t matter if your interviewers are more casually dressed themselves; wearing a suit, as the candidate, is still an expected convention typically. But aside from picking out the right clothes, you also need to make sure that you look polished and groomed–that your clothes fit you well, that your hair is neat and in place, that your makeup is professional and not heavy-handed. It’s also key that you feel comfortable in whatever you’re wearing; you don’t want to be constantly adjusting your neckline or fidgeting with your cuffs.

5 interview mistakes you can easily avoid
Not being ready to talk about salary
Job seekers are often more uncomfortable with conversations about salary than anything else, and as a result, they often don’t prepare for how they’ll handle questions about it. This is a huge disservice to yourself. If salary does come up and you try to wing it, you’re likely to end up with less money in your offer than if you were prepared. So don’t leave it to employers to manage salary discussions for you; do your research and thinking ahead of time so that you can field salary questions confidently.

World’s largest flawless diamond up for auction

An auction house employee holds a pear-shaped diamond weighing 101.73 carats, as she poses for the photographers in central London

Absolute perfection! A new colourless pear-shaped diamond weighing 101.73 carats, touted as the world’s largest ‘flawless’ gem ever, will go under the hammer in Geneva.

The rough diamond of 236 carats was found at the jwaneng mine in Botswana and took 21 months to polish.

The sensational gemstone is not only one of the largest pear-shaped diamonds known till date, it is also one of the world’s most perfect diamonds: a D colour, Type IIA Flawless gem, auction house Christie’s said.

“Just as a great artist is able to ‘see’ a masterpiece in a block of marble, a perfect diamond is the result of the skill and vision of a master cutter who is able to uncover beauty from a rough gem,” Rahul Kadakia, Head of Jewellery, Christie’s Switzerland and Americas said.

“On 15 May, Christie’s Geneva will offer for sale this wonderful pear-shaped diamond of 101.73 carats, which has literally been sculpted like a work of art.

“This diamond is in its scale, quality, and rarity one of the most beautiful ‘white’ diamonds Christie’s has ever had the honour of offering for sale,” Kadakia said in a statement.

Meeting every criteria of perfection, the diamond on offer at Christie’s Geneva May auction of Magnificent Jewels has been graded by the Gemological Institute of America with the best colour, D, and the best clarity, Flawless.

Its absolute symmetry is a tour-de-force, demonstrating the exceptional skills needed to achieve such a perfect gem.

It also benefits from rare brilliance and inner limpidity that is only to be found in the chemically pure Type IIA diamonds, which account for less than 2 per cent of the world’s diamond production, said Christie’s.

The world’s most famous pear-shaped diamond is the Cullinan I, a colourless, Type IIA stone of 530.20 carats, which forms part of the British Crown Jewels. This is also the largest colourless diamond known, it said.

The current auction record for a colourless diamond was set by the historical 76.02 carats cushion-shaped Archduke Joseph Diamond when it sold for $ 21.5 million at Christie’s Geneva in November 2012.

In May 2011, a perfectly symmetrical 56 carat heart-shaped diamond, sold for more than $10.9 million becoming the most valuable heart-shaped diamond ever sold at auction.
