Mistakes in Oscar-nominated movies

Films struggle to get every last detail right, but even those creating these Oscar-nominated masterpieces can miss a Rolex or two in a period piece.

“Silver Linings Playbook” is set in 2008, based on the Eagles’ games mentioned in the film. But in the movie, fans wear jerseys for Nnamdi Asomugha, who didn’t join the team until 2011, and for Michael Vick, who also wasn’t on the team in 2008.

In “Argo,” which is set in 1979, Ben Affleck’s character wears a 2008 Rolex wristwatch. In the last scene between Affleck and his on-screen son, there is a Boba Fett toy on the shelf — even though the “Star Wars” character wasn’t introduced until 1980 with “The Empire Strikes Back.”

In “Moonrise Kingdom,” the cars are from the future. The film is set in 1965, but the police car is a 1968 Plymouth and the vehicle that is crushed by the tower is a 1970s VW Beetle.

During the song “At the End of the Day” in “Les Misérables,” Anne Hathaway’s earpiece, used to accompany the live singing, is visible in her right ear when she’s singing with the rest of the chorus.

In “Django Unchained,” there is a Nefertiti-bust replica in the villa of Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. That bust was not discovered until 1912, but the film is set in 1858.

Mistakes in Oscar-nominated …
In “Brave,” Merida’s family sits down to eat, amongst other food, tomatoes and potatoes for lunch. However, tomatoes and potatoes originated from the Americas and they were not introduced to Europe until the second half of the 16th century.

Look closely during the scene in “The Master” where Joaquin Phoenix is challenged not to blink — or else he’ll have to restart a series of questions. He clearly blinks, with no penalty.

Mistakes in Oscar-nominated …
In “Lincoln,” Mary Todd Lincoln voices concern that a sniper might kill her son. However, the word “sniper” was not used until after the Civil War. The historically correct term would have been “sharpshooter.” The film also shows a bust of President Woodrow Wilson, who wasn’t even born until 1856.

Mistakes in Oscar-nominated …
For the 7/7 London bus bomb scene in “Zero Dark Thirty,” the movie clearly shows a bus marked 172 to St Paul’s. A few scenes later, a commentator on the TV news channel refers to it as the number 10 bus. The actual bus that blew up was the number 30.

Mistakes in Oscar-nominated …
In “Life of Pi,” when the tiger jumps back on the lifeboat after leaving the island, there is no movement on the canvas to indicate weight. Seconds later, the boy steps onto the same canvas and it flexes under his feet.
