Pi’s boat up for grabs: Raft that carries him to safety under the hammer for charity

A still from Life Of Pi

The makers of the fantasy adventure movie Life of Pi, based on the eponymous Booker prize winning novel by Yann Martel, are set to auction the iconic lifeboat aboard which the shipwrecked protagonist and his companion, a Bengal tiger, sail to safety.

The boat, to go under the hammer next week for an approximate Rs.22 lakh ($ 40,000), has been modelled on real rafts used between the 1920s and 1950s.

The American online retailer, Gilt Groupe, said on Friday the lifeboat is among a host of other collectibles from the film on auction, including posters signed by its director Ang Lee and a collection of vibrant saris, valued between Rs.7,700 ($ 140) and more than Rs.3.3 lakh ($ 6,000).

The proceeds will go to the Orangutan Foundation International. The movie, slated for a November 21 release, stars Tabu, Irrfan, Tobey Maguire and newcomer Suraj Sharma in the title role, and has already begun garnering good reviews, especially for its stunning and surreal visual graphics.

Music maestro A.R. Rahman, who caught an early screening of the film, tweeted on Saturday that Life of Pi is a “masterpiece”. “Just watched Life of Pi at Fox Studios… it’s a masterpiece!! So much Tamil in it !! Don’t miss it ….;-),” his post read.

The film includes a large amount of computer-generated imagery (CGI) by visual effects company Rhythm & Hues Studio Inc. (R& H) of Golden Compass and Babe fame.
