Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, L.K. Advani, Nitish Kumar, Mulayam Singh Yadav – the number of prime ministerial aspirants in the country seems to be rising with each passing day. And the latest to join the list is Tamil Nadu Chief Mminister J. Jayalalithaa.

Though the AIADMK supremo has not yet thrown her hat in the ring, it’s no secret that she has set her sight on the national stage.

And in the Dravidian political landscape, where sycophancy rules the roost, her followers have already started eulogising ‘Amma’ as the PM-in-waiting.

Posters depicting the Poes Garden diva unfurling the Tricolour at the ramparts of Red Fort dot the state’s landscape, from Chennai to Madurai.

Interestingly, Hindutva heartthrob Modi, himself a PM contender, and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee are, along with Odisha Chief Mminister Naveen Patnaik, shown to be saluting ‘PM Jaya’ on the posters. Interestingly, Andhra Pradesh CM N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, too, is featured on the posters.

The AIADMK’s overtures come at a time of political upheaval at the Centre following the pullout of TMC from the UPA government.

However, Jayalalithaa had made public her ambition soon after her party’s resounding victory in the assembly poll, when she told a party conclave that the AIADMK was destined to play a greater role in national politics.

“The two leaves (AIADMK’s symbol) will blossom and flourish in places beyond Tamil Nadu,” she had said. “Now, it’s time to strengthen ourselves further to become a force to decide the next PM.”

Subsequently, her ardent supporter and saffron ideologue Cho S. Ramaswamy pitchforked her candidature for prime ministership before Advani and Modi, urging the BJP to support her bid if it could not form the next government.
