Home Minister Chidambaram to face trial in Lok Sabha election case

P Chidambaram

In a big blow to Union Home Minister P. Chidambram, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday decided that he would have to face trial in the case of alleged manipulation that led to his victory in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls from Sivaganga constituency.

The court was hearing a petition filed by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) leader R.S. Raja Kannappan challenging Chidambaram’s win.

The court observed that not all allegations made against Chidambaram were wrong. With the verdict Chidambaram now would have to face trial.

The AIADMK candidate, who had narrowly lost to Chidambaram, had filed the petition seeking declaration of the election as void, alleging manipulation of votes and corrupt practices had been committed by the senior Congress leader, his election agents and others, with his consent. He had lost to Chidambaram by 3,354 votes.

Reacting to the court decision, Chidambaram said it was a procedural petition and he had objected to certain paragraphs of the allegation made by the AIADMK candidate. He said that it had nothing to do with merit of the case.
